MARRAKECH TRAIN STATION

Trains are regularly between Marrakech and Casablanca; however, other trains operate to towns and other cities north of Marrakech as Rabat, Fes and Tanger. In general, trains are comfortable, offering 2nd, 1st and “Couchette” class carriages.

1.

Couchette is the most expensive ticket because offers the major comfortability. It is highly recommended for night trains because it has bunk beds and air conditioning.

2.

First class is the most recommended to travel in short trips. It is also equipped with air conditioning. Seats are comfortable and are pre-assigned.

3.

Second class is the normal ticket and is offered on a first come, first serve basis.

Marrakech Train station is a modern building, even though the facade dates from 1923 and was remodelled. The current venue was inaugurated in 2008 and is housing not only the Train Platforms but also a range of Restaurants, Cafés, and shops.

Trains are operated by ONCF (Office National des Chemins de Fer du Maroc), which is the Morocco’s national railway operator. A state-owned company, under the control of the Ministry of Equipment, Transport and Logistics, being the responsible for passengers and freight traffic. For some services, those related to secondary transfers, ONCF has a partnership with Supratours.

It should be noted Morocco’s 2040 Rail Strategy, a long-term overall strategy for the development of the national rail network and its various components by 2040. This strategy will generate economic and social benefits with the creation of jobs, and will connect important cities, maritime ports and even 15 airports instead of one, a high commitment to rail transport (ONCF, 2020).
